OpenStudy (timothy.12):

How do you add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions easily?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

For adding and subtracting you need a common denominator.

OpenStudy (timothy.12):

What else do I need to do?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

To add or subtract fractions with the same denominator, you add or subtract their numerators and write the result over the common denominator.

OpenStudy (timothy.12):

What if the fractions have different denominators?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

\[\boxed{\frac ab+\frac cd = \frac{ad+bc}{bd}}\] \[\boxed{\frac ab-\frac cd = \frac{ad-bc}{bd}}\] \[\boxed{\frac ab\times\frac cd = \frac{ac}{bd}}\] \[\boxed{\frac ab\div\frac cd = \frac{ad}{bc}}\]

OpenStudy (timothy.12):

too technical uncle rhaukus. I appreciate you trying to help me though.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

if you want super super super easy \(\dfrac{a}{b}+\dfrac{c}{d}=\dfrac{da+bc}{bd}\) this is always true.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

then you can reduce when you are done. This way you do not need to find the LCM

OpenStudy (phi):

Watch a few of these videos https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/fractions#adding-and-subtracting-fractions Like most things, you have to work at this before it gets easy. It is worth learning this, otherwise later math classes (where they assume you know how to work with fractions) will be difficult.

OpenStudy (danettsep):

when dividing fractions just cross multiply

OpenStudy (danettsep):

for example: \[5/6 \div 4/7 = ?\]
