In the following diagram, BC is tangent to circle O. Which of the following could be the missing side lengths? Select all that apply.

@jigglypuff314 can you help me with this, I don't know how to work this problem.

OpenStudy (dengeki_daisy):

Can someone help?

OpenStudy (dengeki_daisy):

I don't understand how to do this, can you explain

563blackghost (563blackghost):

Since the question states that `it is tangent to the circle` that would mean that it is perpendicular so that would mean that this is a right triangle....we know of the hypotenuse's length which is `20` but not the legs so we can use Pythagorean Theorem.... \(\Huge{a^{2}+b^{2}=20^{2}}\) \(\Large{a^{2}}\) and \(\Large{b^{2}}\) both have to equal the sum of \(\Large{20^{2}}\) so we can substitute the answer choices as `a` and b`.

OpenStudy (dengeki_daisy):

Oh okay, so when I start plugging in my answer choices do I square them??

563blackghost (563blackghost):

Yup :)

563blackghost (563blackghost):

If the sum of the number equal \(\Large{20^{2}}\) then they are an answer, if they don't then they are not.

OpenStudy (dengeki_daisy):

So 20 squared is the same as 400 right?

563blackghost (563blackghost):

Yes.

OpenStudy (dengeki_daisy):

is A and D my answers
