If I were you I would reference to things like the 14th amendment. The 14th amendment addresses citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws, and was proposed in response to issues related to former slaves following the American Civil War. This could back up your claim on how everyone should be considered equal and human rights should be honored because it is clearly stated in the constitution, something that we Americans are expected to live by and respect.
