I think (c) is the best choice.  Douglass's writing was his own personal account, and it was a huge sensation because there were not many accounts at that time by articulate black slaves giving their personal views of life in slavery.  It gave a big boost to the abolitionist movement when it was published.  Many people could see directly what he had been through.
