What was the U.S.S. Maddox doing in the Gulf of Tonkin prior to the August 2 attack? She was on a routine patrol. She was on an intelligence mission. She was retrieving torpedo boat wreckage. She was headed for China's coastline.

@AloneS and @CandyCove u guys are incorrect, B was correct
Officialy?
Meanwhile, U.S. warships such as the Maddox conducted electronic espionage missions in order to relay intelligence to South Vietnam. http://www.history.com/news/the-gulf-of-tonkin-incident-50-years-ago Daniel Ellsberg, who was on duty in the Pentagon the night of August 4, receiving messages from the ship, reported that the ship was on a secret electronic warfare support measures mission (codenamed "DESOTO") near Northern Vietnamese territorial waters.[13] On July 31, 1964, USS Maddox had begun her intelligence collection mission in the Gulf of Tonkin. area. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_of_Tonkin_incident
yes officially, do research before just randomly giving answers @CandyCove @AloneS
;)
Is A correct or B, @wwhitlock?
I usually correct puppies when I think he's wrong. He ain't wrong this time. The US didn't admit it was a spy mission. You can't get congress to let you start a war by saying that. So at the time they may have said it was routine. But yeah. South Vietnam was our ally and we were snooping on the North for them.
How lovely. Thanks anyway, @wwhitlock.
thank you is the best response
