Can someone please help me with some Algebra 1?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Askaway :-)

OpenStudy (memyselfandpi):

The table below shows the distance y, in miles, traveled by a toy car in x minutes: Time (x)(minutes) 20 30 40 50 Distance (y)(miles) 5 10 15 20 Part A: What is the most likely value of the correlation coefficient of the data in the table? Based on the correlation coefficient, describe the relationship between time and distance traveled by the toy car. (4 points) [Choose the value of correlation coefficient from 1, 0.8, 0.5, 0.02] Part B: What is the value of the slope of the graph of distance versus time, and what does the slope represent? (3 points) Part C: Does the data in the table represent correlation or causation? Explain your answer.

OpenStudy (memyselfandpi):

I believe I can do B/C, but not A.

OpenStudy (memyselfandpi):

B: The slope represents how far the toy travels in a certain amount of time.

OpenStudy (memyselfandpi):

The toy travels .5 miles per minute, or a mile per 2 minutes.

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

look at the data. is it linear?

OpenStudy (memyselfandpi):

Yes, it is linear because it increases by a fixed amount.

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

is it perfectly linear?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Plot a graph of the points.

OpenStudy (memyselfandpi):

Ok..

OpenStudy (memyselfandpi):

i plotted it on desmos,

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

What everyone is saying is that if ALL the points fall on the same straight line, then the correlation coefficient is either +1 or -1 If the slope of the line is positive, and all points are on the same straight line, then the correlation coefficient is +1 If the slope of the line is negative, and all points are on the same straight line, then the correlation coefficient is -1

OpenStudy (memyselfandpi):

It is all on the same straight line, and the slope is positive. So the correlation coefficient is +1?

OpenStudy (memyselfandpi):

@jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes, the correlation coefficient is +1 which is the same as just 1

OpenStudy (memyselfandpi):

The correlation coefficient is 1, and the equation is perfectly linear. The relationship between time and distance is every 10 minutes, the toy car travels 5 miles. This gets simplified to 2/1 which means every 2 minutes, the car travels 1 mile. So this is my answer for Part A:

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it looks good

OpenStudy (memyselfandpi):

For Part B: I got the slope of the graph is 2/1, and this means the car travels a mile in two minutes.

OpenStudy (memyselfandpi):

The slope of the graph is 2/1*

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

`The slope of the graph is 2/1` is the same as saying `The slope of the graph is 2`

OpenStudy (memyselfandpi):

Oh right.

OpenStudy (memyselfandpi):

For part c.... Isn't it correlation? I forgot to explain how it is though..

OpenStudy (memyselfandpi):

@jim_thompson5910 Can you help me with part C?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

`Part C: Does the data in the table represent correlation or causation? Explain your answer. ` correlation happens if the correlation coefficient is not +1 or not -1. This means that we have some connection but it's not 100% causation If the correlation coefficient is +1 or -1, then we know 100% it's causation. Causation means one variable directly affects the other. As the minutes go up, the distance goes up too. We can use a formula to determine exactly what the distance will be if we know the time. Or vice versa.

OpenStudy (memyselfandpi):

Thank you for your help :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure thing
