In field theory we think of polynomials as a_nx^n+a_(n-1)x^(n-1)....
But the x is an indeterminate. We don't say things like f(a) we actually plug the polynomial into a homomorphism called 'a' that essentially evaluates the polynomial at a. In this sense x seems more like a variable to me, else it is a place holder for something.
