Solve the given equation for y.

OpenStudy (mellamokatie):

I dont know how to solve it can you help?

OpenStudy (mellamokatie):

How do I find out what x and y is?

OpenStudy (mellamokatie):

@mathstudent55

OpenStudy (mellamokatie):

@emyoung0 do you know it?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

First, subtract 4x from both sides.

OpenStudy (mellamokatie):

okay so then 4x - 12? 8x?

OpenStudy (emyoung0):

Start by putting each equation in slope-intercept form. For the first equation, you have 4x + 6y = 12 4x + 12 = 6y (2/3)x + 2 = y Now that it is in this form, you know that the y-intercept is (0, 2). Then find another point on the line by plugging in any value for x and seeing what value of y is returned. Let's use x = 3. I substitute x = 3 into the equation above and get y = 0. So (3, 0) is a point on the line. Graph the two points on the Cartesian coordinate system and then simply draw a straight line passing through the two points. This is your graph. Now, match this up with on of the graphs listed.. That will be your answer.

OpenStudy (mellamokatie):

Wait I am a little confused so would it be C or D?

OpenStudy (mellamokatie):

@emyoung0

OpenStudy (emyoung0):

It is a positive incline. Your answer is C

OpenStudy (mellamokatie):

Oh awesome thanks! Mind answering some more? I'll repost then tag.

OpenStudy (emyoung0):

Sure :)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Here is the given equation. 4x + 6y = 12 Solve it for y. 4x + 6y = 12 6y = -4x + 12 \(y = -\dfrac{4}{6}x + 2\) \(y = -\dfrac{2}{3}x + 2\) The given equation is now solved for y. From this you see that the y-intercept is 2. Also, you see that the slope is negative. A positive slope means the line goes up to the right. A negative slope means the line goes down to the right. A y-intercept of 2 means the line crosses the y-axis at 2. Look at all 4 graphs, and find the line that has a negative slope and a y-intercept of 2.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

@emyoung0 You need to double check on your math. "4x + 6y = 12 4x + 12 = 6y (2/3)x + 2 = y " which is incorrect. This equation has a negative slope, so your choice is also incorrect.

OpenStudy (mellamokatie):

Oh okay so D?

OpenStudy (emyoung0):

Thanks, @mathstudent55 I see where I missed a step.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Yes. D is the answer.
