What is the purpose of LEDGER LINES on the music staff?

To make the music more spread out
B
Because flute players need to play notes too!

It extends the Grand Staff above and below the staff for more notes higher and lower than the staff. Middle C ledger line Note also "Links" the treble and bass clef staf's in the middle.
