Marbury got an appointment to a job in the last days of the Adams administration, along with some other men. The paperwork never got processed correctly and the new Jefferson administration didn't really care to have the Adams appointees in jobs they could give to their friends. So Marbury sued Madison, Jefferson's Secretary of State in the Supreme Court. Marbury thought the new administration should have to finish the appointment process and give him a government job. It was a major test of the power of the SC. They ended up ruling that yes, they had the power to review the laws and executive actions. But Mr. Marbury didn't get the job, because Congress hadn't specified any laws that would cover this kind of situation. But the principle of review by the Judicial branch was established.
