OpenStudy (dawnflower09):

I know what the "island of stability" and the "sea of instability" are, but I need to know why this type of research is important. As well, how can the elements involved in the "sea of instability" be used practically?

OpenStudy (photon336):

My guess is in terms of valence electrons, I guess island of stability would mean a filled octet, a valence shell of 8 electrons. well the elements in the sea of instability can react with other elements to obtain an octet.

OpenStudy (dawnflower09):

@photon336 The island of stability is the prediction that a set of heavy isotopes will temporarily stop decreasing stability in elements heavier than Uranium. The sea of instability are a region of elements on the periodic table that are highly unstable & have extremely short half-lives.
