OpenStudy (jellybot23):

More of a chem question, but confused on the mathematics. How do you find pH given concentration and volume? For example, I have for the acid (not named) Volume (L)= 1.760 Conc. [M]= .384 And for the base: Volume (L)= .834 Conc. [M]= .724

OpenStudy (jellybot23):

@mathmate ?

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

do you know any formula for how you can calculi pH ?

OpenStudy (jellybot23):

yes; do you mean the HH formula?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

@Jellybot23 Unfortunately you do not know the acid and the base. Since the concentrations are given in Mol and NOT Normality, we do not know the end result will be acidic or basic. We do not know if the acid is monobasic (like HCl) or dibasic (like H2SO4). So in the end, we don't even get to know if the mixture (if that's what's called for) is acidic or basic. Worse, even so, to calculate pH, we need the acid/base hydrolysis constants \(K_a~or~K_{hydro.}\)to calculate the [H+] of the resulting mixture, and hence the pH, which is the negative log of [H+], Perhaps you have more information in hand, in which case please post a new question (and the entire \(original\) question) under chemistry. People in the chemistry are very familiar with these situations.

OpenStudy (jellybot23):

That's sadly all the information I have, perhaps my teacher made a mistake then. I will inform her of that. Thank you so much! I do have another question under chemistry, would you mind taking a look?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

I'll try!

OpenStudy (thomas5267):

Either we need the equilibrium constants, or the concentrations given are the concentrations of H+ and OH-.
