OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

parking in a student lot costs $3.00 for the first half hour and $1.75 for each hour thereafter. a partial hour is charged the same as a full hour. what is the longest time that a student can park in this lot for $10.00

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Do you know how to start this problem?

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

multiplying 1.75 times 10 and then adding $3.00?

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Well. You can start with $3.00 then add $1.75 til you get to $10.00

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

So like it'd be $3.00 + $1.75 for the second hour, then another $1.75 etc. til you get to $10.00

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

3.00+1.75 times 4

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

yes

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Very good

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Do you understand?

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

so my answer is 4?

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

im starting to understand but some times i get confused

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

It's 5, because it's 3.00 for the first hour then 1.75 the next hours, so 1.75 times 4 equals $7 plus $3 equals $10.

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

so its 5 not 4?

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Correct

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

5 hours

OpenStudy (erniellyd28):

thank you very much for your help :-)

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Not a problem. Have a nice evening.
