OpenStudy (tootsi123):

Suppose that a cyclist began a 297 mile ride across a state, at the same time that a car traveling toward it leaves the eastern end of the state. If the bicycle and car met after 4.5 hours and the car traveled 35.6 mph faster than the bicycle, find the average rate of each

OpenStudy (aaronandyson):

x = avg speed of bicycle x+35.6 = avg speed of car 4.5x = distance covered by bicycle 4.5*(x+35.6) = distance covered by car 4.5x + 4.5(x+35.6) = total distance travelled by car and bicycle 4.5x + 4.5(x+35.6) = 297 Solve for the above equation for x.
