The first step is to write out the problem in polynomial long division form. See attached
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
have you done that so far?
OpenStudy (joshoyen):
Yes
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
Focus on the terms I've circled in red (see attached).
Fill in the blank
7x times ______________ = 7x^3
OpenStudy (joshoyen):
Ooooh okay , now I know what to do , thanks man!

Fill in the blank
7x times ______________ = 7x^3
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
7x times something = 7x^3
what is that "something"?
OpenStudy (joshoyen):
7x^2
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
yes
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
So we write 7x^2 over the x^2 term like this

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
then we multiply 7x^2 by the (7x-4) term
7x^2*(7x-4) = ???
OpenStudy (joshoyen):
yee i know how to do the rest now :) , thanks man
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
ok tell me the quotient and remainder
OpenStudy (joshoyen):
Alright i'm still working on it
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
hmm I messed up

when I asked `7x times something = 7x^3` and you said 7x^2, that is not correct
it should be x^2. I wasn't thinking
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
7x times x^2 = 7x^3
OpenStudy (joshoyen):
yeah
