Triangle XYZ below is an isosceles triangle with legs XY and ZY. Segments QR and QS are perpendicular bisectors of triangle XYZ. Find the length of segment QS if QR = 4x + 1 and QS = 3x + 6.

23 22 21 20

OpenStudy (chrishogan):

I'm working out the problem right now.

OpenStudy (jasbe):

Ok thank you @ChrisHogan

OpenStudy (welshfella):

the 2 sides are equal so solve for x:= 4x + 1 = 3x + 6 then plug in the value of x into the expression for QS ( 3x + 6)

OpenStudy (welshfella):

can you find x ?

OpenStudy (jasbe):

im doing it now @welshfella

OpenStudy (welshfella):

OK

OpenStudy (jasbe):

1x = 5 ? @welshfella

OpenStudy (welshfella):

right x = 5 so all you need do now is replace x in 3x + 6 by 5 and work it out.

OpenStudy (jasbe):

so 3(5) + 6 = 23 ?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

No - try again 3(5) = 15

OpenStudy (jasbe):

so 3(5) + 6 = 21

OpenStudy (welshfella):

yep

OpenStudy (jasbe):

okay thank you !

OpenStudy (welshfella):
