I created an account here so I could help my younger brother study because of my lack of knowledge on this subject, so could someone with knowledge of sign language help me translate some things into ASL gloss, so that I know I'm actually helping him?

OpenStudy (addy):

Welcome to OS! ^_^ It was so nice of you to join to help your brother study. ^_^ I normally use Signing Exact English, so if I am not helpful, please tell me. :-) I'll try. Ask away! What do you need help with?

OpenStudy (etallman23):

Well, thank you for replying first off. And I just need some things translated so I can check what he has before he sends it in. I don't trust my own knowledge about this enough to try it on my own. Here are the guidelines. You have learned many ASL signs and how to use them in conversation. You have also learned about signing stories. With the knowledge that you have, create a part of a story that has conversation between “Jill” and “Jan” with the guidelines listed below. The scenario is as follows: Jill and Jan go to the same school. There is going to be an art show in the school cafeteria next week, after school. Jill wants Jan to go with her to see the art that she has made. Jan says yes, she will go, and they must decide on a day and a time, as well as where to meet. Jill also tells Jill about a drawing that she made that is in the show. Your guidelines are as follows: You must use all five vocabulary words in your story/conversation: ART, DIFFERENCE, EXPERIENCE, IDENTIFY, IMAGE/PICTURE, SUPPORT. Alternate conversation: Have Jill and Jan exchange conversation enough times so that each has at least five sentences of conversation (for a minimum of 10 sentences of conversation, total). Write the sentence in English first. Underneath the sentence, write the ASL equivalent—what you would sign. If the signing needs any nonmanual markers (nmm), mouth morphemes (MM), inflection, or classifiers/mime, write that description either within or below the ASL translation, in brackets. And here is what he came up with in english. 1e. Jill sat down beside Jan at lunch. "Hello, Jan" she said with a smile. 1a. 2e. "Hi, Jill, how are you?" Jan replied 2a. 3e. "My ART is in the show!" Jill said 3a. 4e. "Wow! When is the show?" Jan asked 4a. 5e. "It is next week! Friday at 8 o'clock in this cafeteria" Jill said very excitedly 5a. 6e. "I will come to show my SUPPORT" Jan assured her 6a. 7e. "Thank you! I was hoping you would" Jill smiled big 7a. 8e. "No, problem, how will I IDENTIFY which PICTURE is yours?" 8a. 9e. "There is a big DIFFERENCE between my art and everyone else’s. You'll see" Jill said with a wink. 9a. 10e. "Oh no!" Jan pretended to be afraid. "Past EXPERIENCE tells me I should be worried about your surprises" She joked. Jill and Jan laughed and then the bell rang, and lunch was over. 10a. I would greatly appreciate the help and I thank you in advance most profusely.

OpenStudy (addy):

Sooo... For the alternates.... Maybe you could send me what you or him came up with and I could check them to see if they are right. And, if there are mistakes, I could fix some of them up? Is that okay with you?

OpenStudy (addy):

For an example for the first one, (Jill sat down beside Jan at Lunch. "Hello Jan" she said with a smile) could be "Jill sat with Jan. Jill say "hello Jan" and smile." I don't know if this is right. As I said before, I use Signing Exact English, so I don't know if this is right. Do you think this looks good? Maybe ask your brother.... What is his opinion on this first one? And, so I can be on time-- does this assignment have a due date?

OpenStudy (etallman23):

I would tell you, but I have no idea how to do this stuff and my brother has decided to be obstinate about this I asked him and he just gave me a huff and stared at the ceiling... And it was due yesterday. Wish I could be more help.

OpenStudy (addy):

Oh.... Did he turn it in? Sorry if I wasn't around today. I had a dentist appointment, my mouth was numb, and my mom told me to stay off the computer. I was hoping to get you back..... Now I feel guilty for not helping.... I'm sorry. :-( Next time I'll try to get to you sooner...... ;-; I feel so bad for not helping you sooner..... So sorry. I'm on my iPad mini at the moment. Sorry again... *sobs in corner

OpenStudy (etallman23):

It's fine, he hasn't actually. Like half the assignment this month *slowly losing mind* the good news at least is that he can finish them and still get full credit.

OpenStudy (addy):

Oh! Phew! *breathes out a sigh of relief* and plz don't loose your mind.... I'll try to help you some more so it can be done...

OpenStudy (etallman23):

As I said it' s okay, I can help him just fine in his other courses. I just need the help in Sign Language. I did college courses in most of his others.

OpenStudy (addy):

Would that be okay? I'll think about it tonight, and maybe get the results to you tomorrow. Well... My results..... I'm going to be taking ASL next year, so I will get some practice with ASL glossing.... ^_^ I will either post it or message it to you. Will that be alright? I could help you with some sign language though... I love helping friends.

OpenStudy (etallman23):

I would greatly appreciate that and I thank you for your time.

OpenStudy (addy):

You're welcome! I'll get the results 4 U tomorrow. ^_^

OpenStudy (etallman23):

Alright then. Thank you again.

OpenStudy (addy):

I copied and pasted this from my open office. I worked on it, and I hope it looks good to you. Here you go, @Etallman23. I hope you and your brother approve with this. ^_^ I think this looks good. What do you think? 1e. Jill sat down beside Jan at lunch. "Hello, Jan" she said with a smile. 1a. Jill sat with Jan to eat. “Hello, Jan” Jill say with smile. 2e. "Hi, Jill, how are you?" Jan replied 2a. “Hi, Jill. How you?” Jan ask. 3e. "My ART is in the show!" Jill said 3a. “My ART in show!” Jill say. 4e. "Wow! When is the show?" Jan asked 4a. “Wow! When is show?” Jan Ask. 5e. "It is next week! Friday at 8 o'clock in this cafeteria" Jill said very excitedly 5a. “Show next week! On Friday in lunch room at 8.” Jill say ecxitedly. 6e. "I will come to show my SUPPORT" Jan assured her 6a. “I come. I show my SUPPORT.” Jan said. 7e. "Thank you! I was hoping you would" Jill smiled big 7a. “Thank You! I wish you come.” Jill smile big. 8e. "No, problem, how will I IDENTIFY which PICTURE is yours?" 8a. “It okay. How I can IDNETIFY PICTURE you?” 9e. "There is a big DIFFERENCE between my art and everyone else’s. You'll see" Jill said with a wink. 9a. “There big DIFFERENCE with my art and other people art. You see soon.” Jill say and wink. 10e. "Oh no!" Jan pretended to be afraid. "Past EXPERIENCE tells me I should be worried about your surprises" She joked. Jill and Jan laughed and then the bell rang, and lunch was over. 10a. “Oh no!” Jan play scared. “Past EXPERIENCE make me worry about you surprise.” she say with laugh. Jill and Jan laughed, and the bell ring. Lunch was done.

OpenStudy (etallman23):

Thank you very much, I think this will work but even if it doesn't it will still at the very least give us a starting point. I'll see if it works and once again thank you for your time.

OpenStudy (addy):

No Problem! I enjoyed helping out. Ask again if you need any more help with sign language or anything else. ^_^
