what problems did the United States face during the Vietnam War

The desire to combat communism and show that the US would not let small far away countries be overwhelmed.
The small far away countries did not want to be communism but were not really prepared to fight - though happy for others to fight on their behalf.
The war was expensive and increasingly unpopular and unwinable.
Massive firepower and technology could not defeat a determined enemy in jungle warfare without the help of the population.
