uhh I wasn't taught how to solve it with that method..

lol i think ur using some kind a calculator
OpenStudy (alivejeremy):
Nah
OpenStudy (welshfella):
the question was to factor the function, right?
OpenStudy (bellezabrilla):
yeah find the roots algebraically
OpenStudy (alivejeremy):
\[y=2x^2-36x-38\]

OpenStudy (welshfella):
well is it
2x^2- 36 - 38 = 0 ?
OpenStudy (bellezabrilla):
yeah
OpenStudy (welshfella):
* -36x
OpenStudy (welshfella):
you can simplify it a bit by dividing through by 2 giving
x^2 - 18x - 19 = 0
it will factor - you need 2 numbers whose product is -19 and whose sum is -18
can you think of them?
OpenStudy (alivejeremy):
\[y=2(x^2-18x - 19)\]

OpenStudy (alivejeremy):
calculator says that
OpenStudy (alivejeremy):
^^
OpenStudy (welshfella):
the numbers are -19 and + 1
so we have
( x - 19)(x + 1) = 0
OpenStudy (welshfella):
those are the 2 factors
OpenStudy (bellezabrilla):
So it would be (x-19)(x-1) ?

OpenStudy (welshfella):
no x+1 not x-1
OpenStudy (welshfella):
if you what the roots then you solve the 2 equations
x - 19 = 0 and
x + 1 = 0
OpenStudy (welshfella):
* want
OpenStudy (welshfella):
- but the factors are x - 19 and x+ 1
OpenStudy (bellezabrilla):
ohh I totally forgot about that part

OpenStudy (bellezabrilla):
kk so i got x=19 and x=-1
OpenStudy (welshfella):
yae if 2 things are multiplied together and are equal to 0 then either one can be = 0.
OpenStudy (welshfella):
right
OpenStudy (bellezabrilla):
so the roots are 19 and -1 ?
OpenStudy (welshfella):
yes
