OpenStudy (supercalifragalisticexspeaalli):

can someone help plzzzz!! i will medal and fan

OpenStudy (supercalifragalisticexspeaalli):

Find the remainder when f(x) = x3 − 14x2 + 51x − 22 is divided by x − 7. 36 8 −8 −36

OpenStudy (supercalifragalisticexspeaalli):

lol it's ok

OpenStudy (math&ing001):

What have you done so far ?

OpenStudy (supercalifragalisticexspeaalli):

nothin idk how to do it

OpenStudy (math&ing001):

Ok I'm gonna start to show you the method, and you try to complete.

OpenStudy (supercalifragalisticexspeaalli):

ok

OpenStudy (math&ing001):

|dw:1465472566635:dw|

OpenStudy (math&ing001):

You see what I did there, I multiply (x-7) by x^2 because that's how we get rid of the x^3.

OpenStudy (supercalifragalisticexspeaalli):

oh ok

OpenStudy (math&ing001):

So now how do we get rid of the -7x^2 ?

OpenStudy (supercalifragalisticexspeaalli):

do u have to add 22 to both sides??

OpenStudy (math&ing001):

We can't do that. We are dividing. We need to find something, that, when multiplied by x is gonna give -7x^2

OpenStudy (supercalifragalisticexspeaalli):

so we have to find a number to divide by -7x^2

OpenStudy (supercalifragalisticexspeaalli):

@courtney_celiene1236

OpenStudy (math&ing001):

|dw:1465473406654:dw| Yes, a term when multiplied by (x-7) will give -7x^2 . Which here is -7x.

OpenStudy (math&ing001):

Can you go on from here ?

OpenStudy (supercalifragalisticexspeaalli):

yea do i just divide 2 by -22

OpenStudy (math&ing001):

Here we are dividing the rest which is (2x-22) by (x-7)

OpenStudy (supercalifragalisticexspeaalli):

so would it be written like 2x-22/x-7

OpenStudy (supercalifragalisticexspeaalli):

or would it be 2x-22 over x-7

OpenStudy (math&ing001):

Here's what we did before : x3 − 14x2 + 51x − 22 = x²(x-7) - 7x2 + 51x - 22 Then : x²(x-7) - 7x2 + 51x - 22 = (x² - 7x)(x-7) + 2x - 22

OpenStudy (supercalifragalisticexspeaalli):

so would the answer be -8

OpenStudy (math&ing001):

|dw:1465473925480:dw|

OpenStudy (math&ing001):

Yes -8 is correct

OpenStudy (supercalifragalisticexspeaalli):

yessss

OpenStudy (welshfella):

there's an easier way to do this Use the Remainder Theorem:- If a polynomial is divided by (x - a) then the remainder is given by f(a).

OpenStudy (welshfella):

so if you replace x in the given polynomial by 7 and find f(7) you'll get the remainder.

OpenStudy (welshfella):

f(7) = 343-686 + 357- 22 = -8
