1. One of Ebony’s stores is a small shop that sells hats and caps. (a) When Ebony first opened the shop, it sold only 5 hats on the first day. The mean, median, and mode of the prices of those 5 hats were all $6. But the 5 hats did not all cost $6. What could have been the cost of each of the 5 hats? Show your work.

OpenStudy (smiley):

Then I have b

OpenStudy (smiley):

You also need to explain it

OpenStudy (shy_boy):

well to find mean whe have to add the total all the values and divide them by the total number of values

OpenStudy (shy_boy):

add all the values*

OpenStudy (shy_boy):

"mode" is the value that occurs most often in the list of values

OpenStudy (smiley):

ok...

OpenStudy (shy_boy):

and the Question says that if we take the mean, mode and median for the total price of 5 hats we get 6 as an answer for mean, mode and median while the total price of all the 5 hats isn't 6 so what can possibly be the price of a single hat

OpenStudy (shy_boy):

so what you'll have to to do is to take any five number and add them and divide by 5 and you should get the answer 6

OpenStudy (welshfella):

as 6 is the median and mode we can write cost of hats as __ 6 6 __ __

OpenStudy (welshfella):

total cost is 5 *6 = $30 so the remaining 3 must cost $18

OpenStudy (hedgepig):

hi "cute mugshot girl". Interesting Google image usage.

OpenStudy (smiley):

I am not quite sure what you mean by so the remaining 3 must cost $18 :)

OpenStudy (welshfella):

well 2* 6 = 12 and total cost = 30 So 3 remaining must cost 30 - 12 = $18

OpenStudy (smiley):

ok

OpenStudy (welshfella):

There are a number of possibly answers here not just 1 answer

OpenStudy (welshfella):

for example 4 6 6 6 8 or 3 5 6 6 10

OpenStudy (welshfella):

6 must be the middle number ( the median) and as its the mode it must occur 2 or more times

OpenStudy (welshfella):

- those examples add up to 30 so the mean is 6 in each case.

OpenStudy (shy_boy):

well welshfella tell me who sells the same thing in different prices i mean how can you sell one hat of 4 one of 8 and 6 like you mentioned

OpenStudy (shy_boy):

it would be all five times 6 divided by 5 to get the mean and as we know that mode is the number the occurs most often so mode will also be 6

OpenStudy (welshfella):

hats can be very different . Big, small , average quality superior quality and so on.

OpenStudy (shy_boy):

hehehe lol but they haven't mentioned anything like that here if i am not wrong

OpenStudy (welshfella):

- but the hats did not all cost $6

OpenStudy (shy_boy):

lol that means the collective price of all the hats isn't 6

OpenStudy (welshfella):

if you think 8 is too hightb try this one 5 6 6 6 7

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

6 6 10 4 4

OpenStudy (welshfella):

- well it isnt total price is 30 average is 6

OpenStudy (shy_boy):

no lol haven't you heard about kis (keep it simple) rule of engineering, keep it simple take all 6, i mean 6 6 6 6 6

OpenStudy (welshfella):

No usiki that cant be right because the median ( middle number) is 6

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

having the same price is boring though -_-

OpenStudy (welshfella):

Shy-boy - read the question - not all hats cost $6

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

4 4 6 6 10 smh

OpenStudy (welshfella):

- yes thats also a possibility

OpenStudy (welshfella):

sorry usuki - you were right the first time. You just didnt put them in ascending order. But the costs were OK.

OpenStudy (shy_boy):

well i have read that but i think what the question says is the collective price of all the 5 hats isn't $6

OpenStudy (shy_boy):

the thing which makes it confusing is how can a item be sold in different prices specially when the haven't mentioned size or quality of the item

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

so we need to add leather, cotton, spandex to the hat mix?

OpenStudy (shy_boy):

they*

OpenStudy (shy_boy):

well that's a great idea @UsukiDoll

OpenStudy (welshfella):

If we are talking about women's hats they can be any price!!
