Rita's company reimburses her expenses on food, lodging, and conveyance during business trips. The company pays $55 a day for food and lodging and $0.45 for each mile traveled. Rita drove 300 miles and was reimbursed $2,335. Part A: Create an equation that will determine the number of days x on the trip. Part B: Solve this equation justifying each step with an algebraic property of equality. Part C: How many days did Rita spend on this trip?

OpenStudy (11study11):

Part A: 55x + 0.45(300) = 2335 Part B: 55x + 0.45(300) = 2335 55x + 135 = 2335 55x + 135 - 135 = 2335 - 135 55x = 2200 55x/55 = 2200/55 Part C: x = 40

omg someone tagged me

OpenStudy (magentama202):

just one sec i'll help u out

OpenStudy (magentama202):

ok so for part A, your equation is almost correct... you just want to have the variable "y" in for the miles since you dont need to solve it yet - thats the next step. The equation should look like this: 55x + 0.45y = 2335

OpenStudy (11study11):

ok

OpenStudy (11study11):

what about the 300 miles

OpenStudy (magentama202):

And part B is perfect - nice work!

OpenStudy (magentama202):

the 300 for the miles (300=y) is correct as well. You may want to write 300=y next to the equation at the beginning of Part B.

OpenStudy (magentama202):

For part C, just mention something like x=days on the trip=40. Otherwise, perfect as well.

OpenStudy (magentama202):

do you have any other questions?

OpenStudy (11study11):

what about the proporties

OpenStudy (magentama202):

so for that it just means like what property you used... you can go to this link for the properties: http://hotmath.com/hotmath_help/topics/properties-of-equality.html

OpenStudy (robtobey2):

From 55 x + 0.45 (300) = 2335 I got x = 40 days

OpenStudy (magentama202):

@robtobey2 can you help 11study11 with the properties? I gave a link although am not quite sure what would go for each step. But what it seems her(?) teacher is requesting is for a different property of equality for each step.
