In regards to Beowulf,
"Fell and Frantic, and forced from their Slumbers" 
-Grendel woke the thanes, surprising them. 
"Thirty of Thanemen Thence he Departed" 
-I assume in these lines he killed the 30 thanemen the first night, and retreated.  
"Leaping and Laughing, his lair to return to," 
-He was happy about the killing.
"With Surfeit Of Slaughter, Sallying Homeward."
Surfeit means an excessive amount, so he Slaughtered an Excessive amount of them, and Happily went Home
