Pens cost 70 cents each and pencils cost 40 cents each. If Iris spent 5.20 on a total of 10 pens and pencils, how many pencils did she purchase?

pens + pencils = 10 or x + y = 10 $0.70*(pens) + $0.40*(pencils) = $5.20 or 0.7x + 0.4y = 5.2
