There is no significant difference. When you know the hypotenuse and another side that's adjacent to the missing angle in a right triangle, you can use 'cosine' or 'secant' ratios.
cosθ = adjacent/hypotenuse
secθ = 1/cosθ = hypotenuse/adjacent.
secant = 1/cos
So, there is no difference. Secant is just the reciprocal of cosine. You can use either one of them. There is just a little algebraic manipulation to get from one to the other.
