What provided a way for peasants who couldn't read to learn about religious teachings?

Which religion are you refering to? Usually in most major religions before literacy became common a Priest, Imam, Rabbi, etc would orally teach about the religion. Religions like Judaism and Islam encouraged literacy much more than the Catholic Church (The Protestant Church Encouraged It). In Christianity before Luther the Bible was only in Latin to keep non-priests from reading and interpreting it for themselves.
