- can imply a deficit.

You can for instance say you had to pay for some drinks costing $1.50 each.
A debit from your balance would read as be -1.50 x no. of drinks.

Another example, let's say temperature of soup drops at a rate of -6 degrees per minute for the first 3 minutes. You can calculate the total temperature drop.

Vector calculations eg. accleration and velocity also utilise signed numbers to indicate direction.
