OpenStudy (proheiper):

0/3 = ?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Zero divided by any number other than zero is zero.

OpenStudy (proheiper):

I didn't know that can you explain why?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Division is the opposite of multiplication.

OpenStudy (proheiper):

Wait

OpenStudy (proheiper):

what?

OpenStudy (proheiper):

I didn't know that either

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

When you divide, you are looking for a number that you can apply to a multiplication. Here is an explanation that shows you .

OpenStudy (itsover9000):

can you go deeper i dont understand

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

10 divided by 2 is a number that when you multiply by 2 you get 10. 10 divided by 2 must be 5 since 5 * 2 = 10.

OpenStudy (proheiper):

Yeah

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Division and multiplication are opposite operations. One of the m undoes the other.

OpenStudy (itsover9000):

but why do things start to not make since when zero is interred in to the equasion

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

What is 18/3 ? It is the number that when multiplied by 3 gives you 18. The only number that multiplied by 3 gives you 18 is 6, so 18/3 = 6

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

To be honest, it is just good to memorize it. anything divided by zero is zero. Don't get overwhelmed by it. But yea, multiplication and division are opposites like adding and subtracting.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Now let's look at 0/3 0/3 is the number that when multiplied by 3 gives you 0. The only such number is 0 since 0 * 3 =0, so 0/3 = 0

OpenStudy (itsover9000):

couldn't you technically solve it if we had a better understanding of it all? like if we could compute it better than just saying its 0

OpenStudy (hollowdensity):

For 0/3, think of it like this. You have Zero Dollar with you. Now you want to divide it equally among 3 persons. What would each person get?

OpenStudy (proheiper):

WO THIS IS CONFUSING

OpenStudy (proheiper):

CAN YOU START OVER?

OpenStudy (proheiper):

lol ams I saw that

OpenStudy (hollowdensity):

Zero means there is nothing. so to divide Zero among three would mean each person gets Zero that is nothing.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The most basic operation is addition. Addition is simply counting things together. Subtraction is the opposite of addition and is defined in terms of addition. Then multiplication is an addition of the same numbers. Division is the opposite of multiplication and is defined in terms of multiplication.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

@HollowDensity You are correct. That is a correct way of seeing it too.

OpenStudy (itsover9000):

is there no other definitive answer besides that

OpenStudy (itsover9000):

can we not go further on what is happening on an atomic level

OpenStudy (proheiper):

lmao

OpenStudy (proheiper):

im still not sure can you show your work?

OpenStudy (itsover9000):

i am a philosopher of a sorts

OpenStudy (itsover9000):

and pro is trolling at this point\

OpenStudy (proheiper):

just gotta make my first question good

OpenStudy (proheiper):

so can pi be divided by 0?

OpenStudy (proheiper):

k its dead

OpenStudy (itsover9000):

i was being legit

OpenStudy (proheiper):

ik

OpenStudy (proheiper):

thats why i closed it

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Division by zero is undefined. There is a good reason for it. Don't confuse dividing a number by zero (undefined) with dividing zero by any number (other than zero).
