SERENA: Cammie! (Starts after CAMMIE, stops, and looks back at the others. Everyone looks uncertain as to what to do.) What now? KATIE: Better check on her. (SERENA hurries out. KATIE moves center, quoting CAMMIE's words.) ''That doesn't make me an alien. It makes me a human." Good speech. (To all) Any other humans here? (Everyone looks around silently. No one answers.) BRIAN: (As if making a joke) Any aliens? (There is a pause. One hand goes up slowly. Then another. One by one, each student raises his or her hand. Some together, some individually, until every hand is raised. BRIAN's hand goes up second to last, followed by KATIE's. They are all aliens. The raised hands become high fives. There is a burst of laughter and congratulations. STUDENTS move from their tables, regrouping into new combinations: popular students coupling with unpopular, former enemies teaming as friends. The celebration continues for a moment then stops suddenly as SERENA reenters the room.) SERENA: I'm sorry, I ... (Notices their stares) What's going on? KATIE: You tell us. SERENA: (Nervously) Cammie went home. She asked me to lock up. KATIE: And you always do everything she asks? SERENA: No ... KATIE: (Holding up the folder) You helped her hand out all this evidence. SERENA: I didn't say I believed in it. I only presented what she said were the facts. BRIAN: Why'd you say you saw the flash? SERENA: She held me and made me watch. BRIAN: (Angrily) We were instructed to deny it no matter what! SERENA: I couldn't deny it! It would have looked suspicious. I went with an alternate plan. BRIAN: Accusing me? SERENA: Accusing everyone. I knew you guys would catch on. The only way out was to make everyone seem suspicious. It worked, didn't it? (There is a moment of uncertainty before the group relaxes.) Now, let's get out of here before we draw attention to ourselves. (The STUDENTS begin to exit in their new groups. There is an obvious change in each of their personalities. Their alien personalities contrast heavily with their human identities.) MELISSA: (To SERENA, humbly) I'm glad you took charge. I'm terrible at that kind of thing. AMANDA: (Casually) You did good. Better than any plan I would've come up with. ERIN: (Grumpily tossing her book aside) I can't believe how much Cammie figured out. The only thing she got wrong was how many of us there were. ERIKA: (Nervously) It's pretty scary. TINA: Yeah. Cammie's actually worse in math than Lloyd. LLOYD: (Dignified) I'd like to remind you that I only appear to be moronic because the light directs me to do so. My feeblemindedness is nothing more than a cunning facade to camouflage my vast intellectual superiority. (LLOYD picks up ERIN's book and begins speed reading it.) TINA: Huh? Next
