zarkam21 (zarkam21):

Which of the following does not have two congruent parallel bases which are discs? Check all that apply. A. Cone B. Prism C. Cylinder D. Pyramid

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

A and D right?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Disc means a circle..

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

So definitely C

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Which ones do NOT have two circular bases?

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

prism doesn't

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

There's more than that

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

well cone is a disc at the bottom

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Don't forget it says "does not have two congruent parallel bases which are discs"

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

Prism and pyramid maybe?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Those don't have any discs at all

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

Exactly so wouldn't that be an answer choice because it doesn't have it

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Yes, you want all the ones that don't have two discs

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

@mathmate

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

prism and pyramid right

OpenStudy (mathmate):

I would say you get the idea, but the idea is that you need to get ALL that do not have parallel bases that are disks.

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

Well I can eliminate Cone definitely

OpenStudy (mathmate):

I suggest you ask yourself two questions for each of the shapes: 1. does it have two parallel bases? If not, that's one of your answers because it does not satisfy at least one of the conditions. 2. Are the bases disks (meaning circular). If the answer is no, then again it is one of your answers. Remember the question asks all shapes that do not satisfy BOTH conditions. If ANY ONE condition (two parallel bases, circular base) is not satisfied, you need to single it out as your answer. In other words, any REMAINING shape has to satisfy BOTH conditions, namely it has to have parallel bases (i.e. at least two bases) AND each base must be circular.

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

Okay so let's do this step-by-step maybe?

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

OpenStudy (mathmate):

To help confirm your answers, can you tell me why you eliminated (if you do eliminate) each of 1. Prism 2. cone 3. cylinder 4. pyramid

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

This is a prism, I know that it does not have discs

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Good! so prism is on the list.

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

Okay next, a cone does have discs

OpenStudy (phi):

a cone has only 1 disk. The "pointy end" is not a disc. So it does not count (they want two discs)

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

Okay so cone would also be on the list

OpenStudy (phi):

yes

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

Would all of them be on the list

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

Well a cylinder has two discs and is parallel right

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Right,so is it on the list?

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

Nope

OpenStudy (phi):

they want a list of everything that does not have two discs. that is everything except the cylinder

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

Yes I got that :)))

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Good, so what is on your list?

zarkam21 (zarkam21):

1,2, and 4
