If we closely examine what a possessive pronoun is, we'd know that it essentially replaces nouns and makes that VERY noun/subject a person or a thing. It takes ownership and demonstrates how one properly possesses the subject.
Lets think of an example.
Hmm, maybe
"We shall finally have what is rightfully ours."
Whats owning here? 
WHO is owning here.
Whats possessing? 
"Ours."
They, the "ours" rightfully own what is theirs.

Another thing that helps is to know the most COMMON possessive pronouns.
These being my, mine, our, ours, its, his, her, hers, their, theirs, your and yours.
These all show some sort of ownership or possess-ment.
