OpenStudy (fhb123):

A transformer has 200,000 windings in its primary coil and uses 10,000V AC input How many windings would be needed to produce at output of 120V AC? Is this a step down or step up transformer?

OpenStudy (fhb123):

I really need help If someone can help me.

OpenStudy (fhb123):

@whpalmer4 @zepdrix

OpenStudy (shamim):

Input voltage = 10000 volt

OpenStudy (shamim):

Output voltage = 120 volt

OpenStudy (shamim):

Which is bigger?

OpenStudy (shamim):

Which is bigger between 120 and 10000

OpenStudy (shamim):

If output voltage is greater than input voltage, then it is stepup transformer

OpenStudy (shamim):

If output voltage is less than input voltage, then it is called step down transformer

OpenStudy (shamim):

Required equation is E*primary/E*secondary = Np/Ns

OpenStudy (fhb123):

Before I close this I want to say that I got the answer of 2,400 windings and a step down transormer.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Yes, that should be correct.
