math behind this cute little boat https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puOZHmgnj9s

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

It is a simple sailboat. It seems to work entirely based on vector addition of wind angle and the sail angle. Just wanted to share this as I study the math/physics behind this little marvel :)

OpenStudy (baru):

i remember it from a problem in 18.02... its constructed such that you can go in any direction just using the sails, including against the direction of the wind!!

OpenStudy (baru):

i think the central idea that allows this is the 'keel' which prevents the ship from moving in any direction except along the length axis

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Yeah, that keel in the water kills all the force of the wind except the component along its direction. Keel is really the key part of a sail boat. I'm gonna try that problem...
