Checks and balances are easy! The executive, legislative, and judicial branches can't do anything without the cooperation of one of the other branches.
Example 1: Congress(Legislative) wants to outlaw dogs. President Obama(Executive) can VETO that law, meaning the law doesn't get passed. YAY DOGS! That would be an example of the Executive branch keeping the Legislative branch IN CHECK.

Example 2: Meanwhile, Obama(Executive) wants to pass a law using an executive order outlawing cats, the Supreme Court(Judicial) declare that unconstitutional.
