The absolute difference between any two real \(a\) and \(b\) is given by \(|a-b|\). This is symmetric in the sense that the order of the terms in the argument doesn't matter: \[|a-b|=|(-1)(b-a)|=|(-1)||b-a|=|b-a|\]
