PLEASE HELP! Find the area of the shape below

OpenStudy (guccidothedishes):

OpenStudy (aadi4502):

You can do the problem with various methods. Either you divide the whole area into small areas of right angled traiangles (Area=1/2*base*height) and small squares and rectangles. Or you can subtract the area of smaller (below the graph ) from larger area to get the area in between. Reply if you need more help regarding the question. Just break into small parts and proceed and you shall find the answer

I'm having trouble breaking it up. I see two triangles but I don't know what to do with the rest.

OpenStudy (aadi4502):

Ok no problem. Lets do it step by step. Now, do you see a triangle with DC as hypotenuse. I guess yes. So, first calculate its area by the formula given above. Now, consider a rectangle with y=-3, y=-8, x=11 and x=0. You can see the rectangle (Just delete the triangle above). SO you can find its area too. Now, subtract the areas of two smaller triangles EF and AF as hypotenuses. And add with the triangle (DC one). If you have any problems, reply. You can do it. Just take a pen paper and start it buddy.

okay so I'm going to find 3 triangles 1 rectangle and 1 square ?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

|dw:1468114331383:dw| This is the other way to do it. Find the area of the triangles and rectangles that i labeled as 1, 2, 3, 4. Then subtract them from the area of the big rectangle around the outside.
