y-intercepts can be very useful for representing `starting amounts`.

So maybe you want to rent a ... lawnmower ... from ... the grocery store? 0_o
and the guy .. uhh.. at the store..
he's like... "hey"..
and you're like.. "oh hi, didn't see you there"

and then he explains that it costs a rental fee of 35 dollars plus 12 dollars per hour that you use the mower.

So we write that relationship like this:
y=12x+35
the initial cost is 35 dollars, for not even using it, just renting it.
what a rip off, right? but that's life.

I just turned this into a soap opera without hardly trying.......    O_________O

"Lets say that Haley's lawnmower stopped running as she was about to cut her grass one fine Tuesday morning and she can't seem to find the problem. It's important that her grass is cut because tomorrow a group of friends are coming over for a birthday party and presentable makes celebrating much more fun. 
So she takes a drive down to BoBill's Hardware store and asks how much it costs to rent a lawnmower per hour. The dude with the cigar hanging out of his mouth explains that it costs an exact rental fee of 35 dollars plus 12 dollars per hour. 
Haley bites her ring finger in a sweating thought as she puts together that the relationship of this would be y = 12x + 35 and the ultimate initial fee would be 35 dollars total. 
After the horror passes that her bank account will possibly run dry by using a lawnmower for an hour alone, she tells the dude she'll go for it as she wipes the escaping tear running down her nose. "
