oops sorry you're right this is what got cut *of the heart, explain how regurgitation, valve prolapse, and stenosis each adversely affects blood flow and the oxygenation of body tissues.

you actually sort of answered your question already. The basic idea is that blood is supposed to be pumped out between the compartments and the role of valves is to allow selective passage of blood between atria and ventricles and prevent blood flowing back (as our bodies are generally upright so the flow resists gravity). Any leaking back of blood through those valves reduces how much blood goes out. You can think of this as a hose that has an opening where water spills out before the nozzle. Backflow means the heart pumps out less volume of blood than it normally would with each cycle. Stenosis also reduces bloodflow but not because of leakback/regurgitation, but narrowing. So a hose with a kink in it would have a similar effect reducing the flow rate.
