OpenStudy (chris215):

.

OpenStudy (phi):

plot the 5 points, and make 4 trapezoids. Find the area of each trapezoid.

OpenStudy (chris215):

ok so I got (1,2) (3,3) (5,2) (6,1)

OpenStudy (phi):

and (0,4) now make trapezoids you get 4 of them. see attached.

OpenStudy (chris215):

im not sure if i did it right but i took the area and got 2,6,4,and 1..

OpenStudy (phi):

base times the average of the two "heights" for example the first trapezoid has base 1 and average height 3 (from (4+2)/2 = 3) that is area 3

OpenStudy (phi):

or you could divide each trap into a rectangle and a triangle on top. then add the areas of both shapes

OpenStudy (chris215):

ok ill do tht what do i do when i get the areas?

OpenStudy (phi):

you add up all the areas that represents how much trash was collected

OpenStudy (chris215):

ok thanks i got 16

OpenStudy (phi):

I got something else. what did you get for the first trapezoid.?

OpenStudy (chris215):

isnt the first one 3?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes. and the 2nd ?

OpenStudy (chris215):

oh wait i kinda see what i did wrong but is it 2.5?

OpenStudy (phi):

the width is 2 the "average" height is (2+3)/2 = 2.5

OpenStudy (chris215):

ok and same for the next?

OpenStudy (phi):

area is width * avg height

OpenStudy (chris215):

and the last 1.5?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, so 3+5+5+1.5

OpenStudy (chris215):

so 9.5?

OpenStudy (phi):

3+5+5+1.5

OpenStudy (chris215):

I thought it was 2.5??

OpenStudy (phi):

2.5 is the average height of the 2nd trapezoid (and ditto for the 3rd) as a check, break the trapezoid into a rectangle and triangle.

OpenStudy (phi):

or, if you look at the plot I posted, you can count the squares

OpenStudy (chris215):

oooh yeah my bad

OpenStudy (chris215):

Thank you!
