Here's a solution using the quadratic equation: x = -b +-square root (b^2 -4ac) / 2a a=2 b=-3 c=-2 x = [--3 +-sq root(9 -4*2*-2)]/2*2 x = 3 +-sq root (9 +16) / 4 x1 = (3 + 5) / 4 x1 = 2 x2= (3-5) / 4 x2 = -2 / 4 x2 = -.5

OpenStudy (robtobey2):

2 a^2 - 3 a - 2 = 0 (a-2) (2 a+1) = 0 a=-(1/2), a=2
