horizontal lines have slope of zero
vertical lines have undefined slope

One example you can do is imagine throwing a ball into the air. It goes up with some speed, then comes back down to the ground. The average rate of change from where it starts to where it ends up is going to be 0. This is assuming the ball is thrown up from the ground and lands back at the ground
