Well, the United States  were friends with the United Kingdom and the UK was friends with Belgium and Belgium was being trespassed by Germany so the UK got mad and attacked Germany then Germany attacked back and the US was friends with UK which made the US lean more towards UK's until Germany attacked their ships with U-Boats which is a declaration of war practically and that's mainly how and why the U.S got in World War 1.
