I feel like he thinks he's dying but I'm not sure.

I'm assuming sleep. It could be death, yes, but he's constantly speaking of dreaming, and stars, as if they're calling out to him. So, he could be slipping into death, yeah, I could see that.

I think you are right about sleep because if he was dying why is he referencing dreaming.
