Equation

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Move everything to the right side except for the root. Then square both sides. On the left side, squaring the square root gets rid of the root. On the right side, square all that is there, and you will get a quadratic trinomial. Then move all terms to one side, combine like terms, and solve the quadratic equation. After you solve the quadratic equation, make sure you check each solution in the original equation. The process of squaring both sides of an equation can sometimes introduce solutions that are not solutions of the original equation with the square root. These solutions are called extraneous and must be discarded.
