Two boats leave a dock at the same time, one traveling due south and the other due west. Later, the boats are 75 miles apart. If the boat traveling due south traveled 30 miles farther than the other boat, how many miles did each boat travel ???

No squares... Simpler than that:

(x) + (x + 30) = 75

The distance between the two boats is 75 miles. So,

2x + 30 = 75
2x = 75 - 30
2x = 45
x = 22.5 miles
So, one boat traveled 22.5 miles. The other boat traveled 30 miles further.

x + 30 = 22.5 + 30 = 52.5.
