No squares... Simpler than that:

(x) + (x + 30) = 75

The distance between the two boats is 75 miles. So,

2x + 30 = 75
2x = 75 - 30
2x = 45
x = 22.5 miles
So, one boat traveled 22.5 miles. The other boat traveled 30 miles further.

x + 30 = 22.5 + 30 = 52.5.
