Carla is using physical instruments (the compass and straightedge) to do the work herself by creating various measurements to construct the lines. Daryl is using technology to make the lines automatically so he is not doing the work of creating measurements but rather the computer is doing so for him. Basically, Carla is doing the manual work and Daryl is letting a computer do the work for him.
