In Italy many of the older staircases are very wide and slopped downward. Why were they designed like this?

@Ms-Brains Sorry, it took me awhile to read the article. The stairs I'm referring to aren't using inside castles or fortresses, they're outside. When I tried looking it up on the internet the only thing I found was in an article about a piazza that was designed by Michelangelo in Rome. The slope allowed horses to go up the steps easier so, the rider didn't need to dismount. However, we don't use horses as much today so, why are they still being used in modern construction.
