What does this mean "Equivalence of a shear to a compression and an extension at right angles to each other" It is a topic of Engineering Physics. Please give some links and explain about this topic

OpenStudy (asylum15):

Are you looking for the literal english meaning, or physics meaning? :)

OpenStudy (arindameducationusc):

ofcourse, physics @Asylum15

OpenStudy (osprey):

I think that this refers to a shear deformation and shear strain. When, say a cube, is sheared, its, say, top surface is moved relative to its bottom surface. If the cube is not stretched at the same time, then it presumably "shrinks" - compressed - a little bit vertically. But it is elongated - extended - horizontally. If this is about stresses and strains, well, it's got an awful lot of geometry and algebra and calculus in it. http://perendis.webs.com

OpenStudy (arindameducationusc):

@osprey I will study it and get back to you.
