OpenStudy (hac138):

ignore the answer. its wrong

OpenStudy (lord_box):

What's the formula for cosine?

OpenStudy (hac138):

sin,cost,tan

OpenStudy (hac138):

cos

OpenStudy (lord_box):

The formula? What method is used to calculate the value of cosine?

OpenStudy (hac138):

i dont know i just need the answer

OpenStudy (lord_box):

I can't "just" give you the answer. The trig functions are ratios of sides of a triangle. Which ratio of sides will give you cosine?

OpenStudy (hac138):

THE 30°-60°-90° TRIANGLE

OpenStudy (hac138):

@Lord_Box

OpenStudy (hac138):

ANSWER AND ILL REWARD MEDAL

OpenStudy (lord_box):

Sine = Opposite / Hypotenuse Cosine = Adjacent / Hypotenuse Tangent = Opposite / Adjacent Secant* = 1 / Cosine

OpenStudy (hac138):

@Lord_Box SO THE COSINE ASNWER IS 1

OpenStudy (lord_box):

Uhm, no. Look at the picture you've sent. Find the side (other than the hypotenuse) that's adjacent to the angle, then find the hypotenuse. Divide the adjacent by the hypotenuse to find cosine.

OpenStudy (hac138):

@Lord_Box help me out homie. i just need the answer

OpenStudy (lord_box):

You would get the answer if you looked at the picture and divided two numbers.

OpenStudy (hac138):

divided them by what and what do i need to divide

OpenStudy (lord_box):

Look at angle x. Next to it is the hypotenuse (the longest side of the triangle) and another side, which we will call adjacent. Divide the adjacent side by the hypotenuse to get cos(x).

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Similar example: Let's say we have a triangle with sides 3,4, and 5. |dw:1470349923545:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if the reference angle is at angle A, then we can apply these labels |dw:1470349969516:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So... \[\Large \cos(\text{angle}) = \frac{\text{adjacent}}{\text{hypotenuse}}\] \[\Large \cos(A) = \frac{4}{5}\] |dw:1470350043347:dw|
