I haven't read it, but a few ways to start are:

Brainstorming (think of everything related to your topic and write it down)
Reverse Brainstorming (Think of everything NOT related to your topic and write it down)
Free Association (Think of your topic, then something related to it, then something related to THAT, etc.)

If there are two things in your free association list that you can't figure out how they are related, write down everything about both things and find related functions, colors, etc. about them.
